Recomendations from our UBB members

Have had 5* service from UBB for all of the couple of years. ... I've been dealing with them. From the initial setup of a local transmitter to the current network maintenance, they have always kept me informed, promptly responsive and delivered on what they promised. The staff have always been pre-emptive and keen to assist in improving my online experience.

The absolute best option if you aren't able to connect to fiber. ... Customer service is unparalleled in a world where ISPs are notorious for their terrible service. Speeds are consistent and even during peak times I've had limited issues. For gamers this is sufficient for all but the most demanding FPS games. Install was easy and efficient, all issues have been quickly resolved.

FAQ's

Frequently asked questions about our 4G broadband.

Our rural 4G broadband plans are for rural areas only. Our plans are perfect for small townships and remote areas. They are suitable for farms or addresses in rural New Zealand, where copper is only available. Addresses that are located in cities or towns are required to get our Urban 4G broadband. If you're in doubt about what your address can get, call our team on 0800 000 945, they can give confirm for you.

Your data will run at full speed until you hit your data cap, after which your connection will continue to run at a maximum of up to 1.2 Mbps until the end of the month at no extra charge. If you require more data, then call UBB; we can add additional data packs for a fee. You can also upgrade your plan (if a higher plan is available at your address), which will take effect in the following month.

Data-capped plans will warn you when you are approaching your data cap. The unlimited data plans cannot have additional data packs permanently added; if you need more full-speed data, please contact us to discuss a different plan.

This is a best-efforts residential service and is not to be used for business or re-sale. Factors such as the performance of your modem, the distance you are from a cell tower, the network capability, the overall use of that cell tower by other customers, the performance and age of the devices you are using, and your in-home WiFi setup can impact the speeds experienced.

The modem is not to be moved from your physical address.

It can take up to 3 hours for your data to renew from midnight on the 1st of every month. This is due to our system processing having to process a large amount of connections.

If you opt to go with UBB's contract terms and get a free wireless modem or discounted install, then UBB's minimum contract length is 24 months. If you need to close the account within the contract period, then there is an early termination fee of $30 for every month remaining in your contract. The modem is required to be returned at your cost, along with any radio that may be installed. If this is not returned in a reasonable amount of time, then you will be charged $325 for the cost of the modem and the cost of the radio and cable. Finally, if you have a radio installed to get a 4G signal, a $100 removal fee plus travel applies. You can opt to uninstall the antenna yourself, but be aware that gear must be returned at your cost and be in working order. More information can be found here. T&C's

Fast enough to stream Netflix, Sky TV, and the cricket on TVNZ on demand! Usually, speeds are around 27 Mbps, with some connections being able to reach much faster speeds. So, in short much faster the adsl connections with the old phone line copper. Please note that broadband speed can be affected by your device's capabilities and connection type. We cannot guarantee speeds over Wi-Fi. Where possible, plug an Ethernet cable into the 4G modem for a fast and reliable 4G broadband connection. If you’re wanting a super-fast connection, both download and upload, then take a look at our fibre broadband plans here.

Plug-and-play coverage refers to only requiring a modem and SIM card for the broadband connection to work. If this is the case, UBB would send the modem out preconfigured and ready for you to "plug in" and then "play" on the internet! If you are outside of the plug-in-play coverage, then you will need to get a radio installed to obtain a 4G signal and deliver your broadband services. This is because you may be a little too far away from the mobile tower for the operation to work well. We don't want to send you a modem and then suffer with slow broadband, do we?

4G broadband uses the existing mobile cell towers to deliver a broadband connection. It can be used in two different ways.

1. The modem and SIM card get a signal from the mobile tower. This is known as plug-and-play; it's the easiest way to get up and running with this service.

2. Antenna installation: this is where a UBB technician installs a special radio that helps obtain a signal from the mobile tower. They run a cable from the radio to the modem, and you are online! They work very similar to our award winningrural broadband service in Canterbury.

Most streaming services require between 5 and 15 Mbps to stream in 4K and 1080p. Our 4G broadband plans can easily enable you to stream your heart's content online!

Wireless broadband and WiFi are similar but not the same. Wireless broadband is how broadband is delivered to your property. Which is wirelessly via radio signals. Instead of the traditional way of bringing fibre to the house or the old copper phone lines. WiFi signals are sent directly from your router at home. It requires the wireless broadband to be delivered to the router for the wifi to work. Read more about our wireless broadband here.

Unfortunetley No, connections are fixed to one address. You can unplug the modem and move it around your address, but using a connection that is not listed with us is breaking the terms and conditions of this service. If you require the connection elsewhere, for example, by going to the holiday home or moving addresses, then let us know! Our team can help and update our system to ensure it works. Please note that sometimes services will not work the same due to network congestion on the mobile towers, coverage, and other factors.

When you get a UBB install, a technician will install a radio on top of your house or shed. They will definitely discuss where your common place is that requires broadband. Once they find the perfect spot to get a signal, they install the antenna, then run an Ethernet cable externally down the side of your building where the modem will be installed. afterward they configure the modem and connect it to the radio. Before leaving, they walk you through setting up an account on the internet, then walk around the building with you to confirm your satisfaction with the coverage. There are limits with the modem; it can only get a wifi signal so far before you will require a wifi extender to boost the signal further if the building is large. Have a look at our wifi extenders here!

The place to position the UBB 4G modem is in a central location in the building where it can see most of the house. It's also helpful to ensure the modem is facing or near the mobile signal tower it gets the broadband from. Please be aware that WiFi is like sound. It doesn't travel through walls that well, especially concrete or metal walls. If you have a larger house, then please have a look at our WiFi-extending options. here. The team will help you plan the perfect wifi-extending solution!

If you're on a data-capped plan (300GB or 600GB) and you go over your monthly data, then not to worry! Your broadband connection doesn't stop working. All that happens is that your speed slows down to 1.2 Mbps. If you require to get back up to full speed data asap, Call in to UBB, and we can add additional data packs at a cost. Our prices for the data packs are:

  1. 1GB - $4
  2. 10GB - $20
  3. 50GB - $65

Data packs that have been purchased do not carry over to the next month.

Home broadband services use 4G signals around metro areas. Because there are multiple towers around, different plans can be offered that allow for higher data usage. Rural broadband services offer different plans due to the fact that there are fewer towers around and more people using a single tower. The more people who connect to a signal tower, the slower it goes for all due to everyone using the internet at once (similar to how it works at home). Read more about that. here). Simply 4G rural plans are designated for rural homes and businesses, and home 4G services are designated for urban areas to ensure the cell towers in both locations are not overloaded and slow for all.
